TILT Artist in Residence
print, layout
The team at hcma reached out, seeking help with the design of an upcoming print publication for TILT. TILT is an hcma sub-brand that promotes curiosity, design practices and houses their artist in residence program. hcma's artist in residence program was celebrating its 25th artist. The team wanted to create a commemorative publication showcasing the project's history, the previous artists in residence and set a vision for what the future of the program looks like.
The printed publication followed a similar size and design system to a previous booklet, featuring the vibrant and playful TILT brand and its many graphic elements. The cover features the TILT type-based pattern with embossed details and a bright neon yellow across the spine.
Throughout the process, the scope of the document changed a few times. Initially, we envisioned each artist taking up two spreads, with creative editorial page designs, featuring a short bio and artist photo, project date and location, a write-up about the project, the final art piece, and lots of behind-the-scenes and process visuals. We quickly realized not every artist had the same amount of visual materials to include, and giving each artist two spreads meant the document would end up with over 150+ pages. Instead, we narrowed down the artist features to one artist per spread. While there are some design variations throughout to best showcase each artist's work, they all follow the same grid and a similar templated page design.
The document is easy to navigate thanks to a clean typographic hierarchy. Wanting the final artwork to stand out on every page and be the main focal point, we tried to keep the copy to a minimum. Oftentimes, the final artist in residency culminated in more than one visual item. The biggest challenge across every feature was deciding which visuals to include.
Beyond the artist's features, we designed an easy-to-follow table of contents, as well as an introduction to the program in the form of an interview, wrapping up with a look towards the future at the end of the document.
To put it simply, Alicia helped make a very complex project easy. She was everything you want in a designer: decisive, offered lots of options for collaboration and feedback, and had a high technical knowledge of book layout and printing that made us confident the details were being taken care of.
She navigated a lot of feedback from multiple stakeholders on a time crunch, but always had an optimistic energy and always delivered on time. We really believe our project would not have happened without her!
