The Tyee Newsletter

The Tyee is an independent, online news magazine from BC, devoted to fact-driven stories, reporting and analysis that informs and enlivens the democratic conversation.
Robyn Smith, editor in chief of The Tyee, reached out to me with a new project idea: The Tyee’s Downtown Eastside Report, a printed newsletter featuring two-three timely stories for the residents of the neighbourhood. Most stories are by Jen St. Denis, The Tyee's Downtown eastside reporter who has covered housing, economics, business and politics.
Beyond referencing the existing branding for The Tyee, additional design decisions were carefully considered. Keeping the varied readership in mind, young and old residents of the DTES, we wanted to make sure the typography across the newsletter was large, legible, and very easy to read. Therefore the newsletter is printed on a large 11x17 sheet, which is then folded twice so it can easily be carried and distributed, sliding into Megaphone magazine, and available for pick up at various core service centres. In order to keep costs down the newsletter is printed in black and white.

"The printed newsletter Alicia designed for a project with The Tyee was exactly what we were looking for, and we are very happy. The beauty and skill of her work speaks for itself. What makes Alicia above and beyond is her professionalism, communication, and her understanding when our project faced little hiccups or needed a few last minute changes. We never felt shamed! We highly recommend working with Alicia."
