The Tyee Anniversary Issue
digital, print, layout
Celebrating The Tyee's 20th anniversary was the perfect opportunity to re-design their annual impact report.
Beyond a handful of special content changes and considerations we change the format to a horizontal layout for better desktop viewing and reading. While the report was initially only designed for digital use, it turned out so successfully that the client decided to do a small print run. The horizontal digital spreads were modified into small booklet spreads, which are laid out below.
The report was titled 20 Lessons from 20 Years and laid out accordingly. After the opening letter, each spread lays out one lesson. Bright bold highlighted lesson numbers in the bottom left corner guide the reader throughout.
The Tyee aims to be a transparent, and approachable publication. They try to share as much information as possible in plain language, avoiding complex jargon and buzzwords. To demonstrate this visually, the cover title is laid out across the cover in a transparent style, without covering any other information.
The Tyee is a unique example of how independent journalism can be done and sustained with their reader support model - the Tyee Builders. Wanting to celebrate and thank each and every one of their supporters, we listed out all 10k+ names throughout the report - a mighty challenge. These are primarily laid out across the front and back cover, as well and the inside covers. While the type is small, you can scan the cover and find your own name listed.
The Tyee uses refreshingly frank writing, storytelling and compelling images that always tell a narrative throughout all their pieces. Highlighting the human side of the organization and its individual stories, we wove many photos throughout the pages.
Just like previous reports, we featured details on The Tyee's financials, as well as a list of the stories and journalists who won awards.
Some of my favourite spreads are towards the end of the report. Once again, thanking and highlighting all the Tyee supporters, photos from the anniversary party, and sharing scanned copies of snail mail The Tyee has received.
In my experience, the quality of a designer's work is equally important to the quality of experience working with them. Alicia is excellent on both counts - her design work is polished, beautiful and on-brand, and she's also extremely professional and on-the-ball, reducing any guesswork or anxiety in the design process. I highly recommend working with her.
