The wonderful team at local agency HARC brought me on to help them publish the 2022 Impact Report for Rainbow Railroad.
Since the impact report is being published digitally, we re-imagined the format, laying out all the content across wide horizontal pages. While keeping the existing brand in mind - logo, colours, typefaces - we had the opportunity to create something brand new for the client, with the potential to set a new look and feel for additional future documents. The goal was to make the report engaging and connective, activist-feeling without alienating corporate bodies. Additionally the document needed to be easy to navigate and scan.
The content is laid out across a flexible multi-column grid, with three main body copy columns. Most pages are primarily white and dark navy - a neutral background palette - allowing us to add rainbow coloured highlights throughout without them dominating the design on each page.
Each section of the report has it's own colour, clearly outlined in the beginning of a new section through a bold drop-cap, page headers and call outs. The section colour is further used as a navigational tool along the far right side of each page, guiding the reader along. Although this report has less than 20 pages, it's very much designed in a forward-thinking manner with a core design system that would hold up across longer, more in-depth reports. Whenever possible photography is used front and center to further support the stories. If a section doesn't have any relevant photography, there are plenty of additional design items to add visual interest to a page, highlighting important details and creating an engaging reading experience.
